Binge Drinking overview.......
What potential issues has this put into your head about binge drinking?
|
It is said that alcohol consumption is embedded in Australian culture. According to the National Drug Strategy Household Survey 2016, over 40% of the population drinks alcohol at least once a week. However, there is a big difference between having 'a quiet drink' and risky drinking (or binge drinking). Binge drinking can lead to serious health, personal and community consequences. It involves drinking heavily over a short period of time, or drinking continuously over a number of days or weeks.

What is BAC??????
Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) refers to the percent of alcohol (ethanol) in a person's blood stream. A BAC of .10% means that an individual's blood supply contains one part alcohol for every 1000 parts blood. A standard drink has 10g of alcohol. One standard drink per hour will raise your BAC by approximately 0.01–0.03g%.

So what does this mean if we want to have a drink and drive? How can use the information above to work this out?
How many standard drinks can we have and be legal to drive?
Does this vary for everyone?

How can you work out your BAC?
There are obviously machines and apps that can work out your BAC. Police officers use breathalysers frequently in roadside Random Breath Testing. If they want a more accurate reading then blood sample will be taken. However, you can use the following formula to give you a ROUGH estimate on what your BAC is.
Task: Your teacher will give you some different sceanrio's on how much you consume over a period of time. Try and work out your BAC as accurately as possibly. Compare and discuss some of the results with your class. PLEASE NOTE: you need to ensure that the drinks are in "standard drinks" (10g of alcohol) not just glasses of drink you have drunk.
Drinking Goggles....... activity
These goggles are specifically designed to mimic the visual effects people have when at different stages of Blood Alcohol Concentration. It is hard to believe that people still get behind the wheel and think their senses have not been affected. (Please take care of the goggles as they are VERY expensive)
Teacher will get you into 5 groups. Each group will be assigned an activity to do.
