Identify why teenagers take risks
Discuss how adrenaline influences our ability to think logically |
Define adrenaline
Identify specific risk taking bheaviur seen in teenagers |
People are tempted to try and impress others by taking part in dangerous and illegal acts, such as
* Surfing on top of a moving vehicle or
* Skipping class.
Similarly, others who would not normally choose to use drugs or consume alcohol, may decide to follow the behaviour of their friends, risking their health and safety.
When situations arise, where people expect others to compromise their health or safety for the sake of entertainment, it is definitely a time to recognise that manipulation is occurring.

So what does this have to do with risk taking?
When adrenaline is released in our system so too is dopamine, a hormone that contribues to well being and a sense of euphoria.
Some people enjoy the after math of adrenaline and seek to have this 'high' again and again.
As teenagers, it is normal to want to explore the world, discover new experiences for yourself and engage in activites that may provoke the release of adrenaline.
It's a time when young people want to discover what they enoy, what makes them feel good and how to go about experiencing new situations.
The key to discovering the world in this time is learning how to make responsible decisons to ensure you are safe while navigating new and exciting situations and environments.
