Romantic Relationships
Adolescence is a time when young people may experience their first romantic relationship. Given that teenage romantic relationships might only last days or weeks, the importance of the relationships and the impact that they have on young people can sometimes be dismissed as trivial or ‘puppy love’.
These relationships are however, very important in the natural, healthy development of a person’s sexual identity and emotional resilience. These relationships provide opportunities to develop conflict resolution skills. They allow adolescents to learn how to nurture intimate relationships and communicate effectively. It is a time when young people might be challenged to manage strong emotions and must reflect on their own attitudes and beliefs about relationships.
